Dollhouse Merchant Spotlight: The Doll House Shop, Richmond, VA

Tom O'Dea, owner of The Doll House Shop in Richmond, VA

Tom O’ Dea, owner of The Doll House Shop, started building doll houses when his daughter was four years old.  She’s grown now and no longer plays with dolls.  But Tom just keeps building doll houses. In 2001, for reasons known only to him, he decided to open a small business to build and sell doll houses. Maybe someone would want to buy them. Well…they did! Not just buy what he made, but give him specific designs and ideas for their dream dollhouses. Can you build this house? Sure. Can you put lights in it?  Sure.  What about running water? Sure. An elevator? Why not. Central air…now hold on just a minute!

From that concept evolved a full-fledged dollhouse operation in Richmond, VA. The shop includes construction studios as well as a complete supply of accessories, furniture and building supplies. Tom specializes in custom dollhouses and doll house repair, and can electrify your dollhouse to add yet another touch of distinctiveness to your keepsake. He takes enormous pride in creating his dollhouses and miniatures. Tom can even create a dollhouse that is a replica of your own home!

The Doll House Shops' vast miniature inventory

No trains, no planes, no other hobbies – just scale dollhouse miniatures. For the “serious” collector, they carry Bespaq, Hansson, JBM and other fine crafted miniatures. For the child’s doll house they carry a huge selection of economy furniture, including kitchens, baths, bedrooms…you name it! Here is a really special reason to shop at The Doll House Shop. They offer special tracking – they’ll find whatever it is you are looking for – no matter how long it takes them.   Instead of traditional scheduled classes for the miniaturist, The Doll House Shop offers “on demand” instruction in things like wiring, wallpapering and faux finishing, such as stuccos, “magic” systems, and others. You can schedule your own class when you want it.  How’s that for exceptional customer service!

Wonderful to hear of a Dollhouse Shop open and
operating! So many of the older shops have closed. Wherever we go we look up Dollhouse
or Miniature Shops and try to visit them. Keep
    up the good work, Tom!

I want to build a dollhouse; I have wanted to do so for years. Well now that I am retired I have the time and resources. I would like to do so from scratch, not a snap together. Do you have any suggestions?

For many years I have forud this to be a very interesting hobby. Not necessarly doll houses, but minatures. Dickens “A Christmas Carol”, was my first inspiration. This called for historic research and a development of scale, plus some level of artistic scale.

I plan to visit your shop.
